The fashion industry is going through a period where drastic changes are necessary and welcome. There is a shift of the overall attitude towards production of a lower quantity of products which are characterized by a higher degree of value, and which are customizable, innovative, and sustainable. One of the key catalysts to this change is Additive Manufacturing (AM). This approach involves the adoption of a technology that eliminates different kinds of constraints in manufacturing that are based on traditional methods like production of organic cotton fabric wholesale, and the introduction of a new retail model.

Adopting AM

The use of additive manufacturing is not new to the industry. As a disruptive form of technology, AM is seen as a technology that can turn data into things that enable mass-customization, supply-chain simplification, and material efficiency gains. Placing a challenge to the very foundations of traditional manufacturing, its experiences and practices are what make it produce an outcome of colored, finished, and ready-to-use garments after a single manufacturing operation. It hugely prevents wastage when compared to the current technique. AM is said to be a technology which could signal a shift in the clothing industry throughout the world. It is easier to understand if you imagine the final product to be made within 24 hours of processing.

AM shifts focus to creativity and design. Besides, it is applied to apparel design and can be adopted in production. This can be accomplished without the need for a detailed manufacturing process knowledge. Reduction of human involvement is evident in the process. Further, it is important to note that it cannot be used as a substitute for mass production. Instead, it gives rise to a new business model like ‘bridge manufacturing’.

AM giving rise to a New Age in Fashion

One of the key factors behind the adoption of AM is the generation of over 1.8 million tonnes in waste alone. This means that manufacturing should be shown a way that ensures sustainability, and which is affordable.

As a result of the changing trends, AM has been subject to a few tests. Note that there are businesses such as GE Additive which provide collaboration opportunities. The company has deep knowledge and experience in executing additive technologies for the production process. Several researchers in reputed institutes are emerging with new solutions to produce ready-to-use, finished, and shaped garments straight from the raw material through a single manufacturing process.

Wastage Reduction Tips

The apparel industry is one of the most booming options these days. Since the majority of people out there are into fashion, the chances for it to diminish are extremely low. However, do you know that this industry is counted amongst the ones that produce most waste on the planet? According to a recent study, people in the United States are likely to toss out approximately 80 pounds of clothing every year. As a result, the amount of garment waste that tends to pile up in landfills becomes 26 billion pounds.

The wastage here does not only come from the final products but also from the excess raw materials and other production tools that are employed when making apparels. For instance, the fashion industry holds one of the top positions when it comes to water and electricity wastage. In fact, a study conducted by UNICEF states that around 20% of the overall water wastage in the world is contributed by the garment industry.

Without any doubts, this is a serious matter that requires sudden and efficient actions. If you are thinking about the steps that you can take to clean up this fashion industry, some of the effectual options are given below.

Banishing Resource-Intensive Garments

One of the most common fabrics that you can spot in the wardrobe of almost every person is cotton. Do you know that it requires around 713 gallons of water to produce one cotton shirt? Note that this is equal to the amount of water that an average person can drink in 2.5 years. Just imagine the amount of water consumed by a cotton fabric wholesale company. Besides, many studies conducted in the field claim that the garment industry consumes around 98 million tons of oil and 26.4 trillion gallons of water annually.

Worse, the oceans have become a ground to dump millions of textile waste. Thankfully, almost every textile company is currently adopting better alternatives these days to tackle this problem. One of the perfect examples of such sustainable alternatives is Pinatex, which is a leather garment that is sourced from pineapple leaves.

Supporting Regenerative Farming

Most top-notch garment companies out there are taking steps to cut the environmental impact caused by the textile manufacturing up to 40% within the next few years; all credit goes to regenerative farming. It is to be noted that clothing such as cotton requires crop cultivation, which leads to soil degradation and adverse loss of biodiversity. Regenerative farming includes natural practices like composting that helps to regain the health of the soil as well as avoid adverse impacts on the environment.

Fashion Brand Tips

As influencer marketing and social media keep driving the fashion segment forward, being able to identify microtrends before their rivals become aware of these is important for fashion brands. Microtrends can last anywhere between 3 and 5 years and can come about virtually overnight.

If you are quick to spot microtrends, then you can monetize on these for a longer period of time, and exit at the appropriate time, before the market becomes too cluttered. However, how does a brand do this?

Know the Difference between a Trend and a Fad

The difference between the two is longevity. Usually, fads are extremely short-lived. Fads gain popularity very fast, but soon fade out. Conversely, a trend would be something similar to athleisure. A trend will have its place in the fashion world, at least until such time that these can be predicted.

How can these trends be differentiated?

Continuous Customer Feedback is Important

To weed out fads and to monetize on microtrends, one has to be alert and attentive to feedback from customers collected on a day-to-day basis. The fashion world is extremely fickle, and collecting and analyzing customer responses quickly is the best way to know what is working and what is not working. Leverage data analytics in order to draw insights out of your customers with behavioral information at your disposal. When the volume of behavioral data and amount of sources generating it grows, you can implement tools such as AI to get the information required to be ahead of the competition. One more trick that fashion brands prefer is using their brand ambassadors to rapidly test forthcoming campaigns.

Have a Multi-Channel Strategy

The communication presence of your fashion brand should span many channels so that you reach more customers. This pertains to setting up a two-way communication channel which will let you collect real-time data. Feedback and insights should not be collected just from social media and e-mail blasts. It is possible to draw this out of online stores, in-store experiences, influencer campaigns, etc. Noting the difference between those using different channels is also important. What may not work for one may work for another, so monitoring all channels and leveraging those to connect with and understanding different audiences are all important.

Using Customer Intelligence

As a fashion brand, you harness customer intelligence to understand who you cater to and serve those people in a better way. Some brands do this exceedingly well, and they leverage all kinds of innovative methods including technology to get more close to customers.

Analyzing real-time data is the key to identifying microtrends. Consumer habits and behavior are constantly evolving things, which is why it is vital to gain continuous feedback. While gathering feedback is easier today, what will give you a competitive edge is doing this more efficiently by leveraging technology.

The textile industry is one of the booming options in the world that offers a wide range of possibilities. With the advanced technologies in the field, you can see some drastic change in this area, especially when it comes to garment manufacturing. The way people tend to define fashion has also changed now. In fact, people have started experimenting with their clothes like never before in recent years. To meet the needs of the customers, garment manufacturers have adopted several trends that are way more productive when compared to the olden days.

Thankfully, it is way easier for the professionals to understand the latest trends and the requirements of various customers with the help of the internet. Similarly, it is easier for the customers as well to figure out the latest trends and innovations in the field. Some of the trending manufacturing ideas in the garment industry are listed below.

Machine Learning

Undoubtedly, the ability of a machine to collect information and assess it is way higher than humans. It will be easier for machines to perform skilled labor as well as to predict the behavior of prospective customers. In fact, some advanced options can even predict the trending silhouette, patterns, colors, etc., that their customers will love and their sentiments over different runway images and products. Nowadays, most top-notch brands are integrating their business with artificial intelligence. This will make it easier for them to figure out necessary information regarding the latest trends and optimize their production, sales, and reduce cost and waste.

Supply Chain Optimization

Nowadays, people are so impatient when it comes to the products they purchase. Hence, most customers tend to collaborate with the textile company that delivers the product in minimum time. This is why most companies have started in-house production to increase their speed and supply chain efficiency. Note that it will be easier and more productive when the steps such as sourcing, samples, creative and technical designs, production, shipping, etc., are done under the same roof. In fact, some high-end companies replaced humans with robots for better results, especially when it comes to tedious and repetitive tasks.

Digital Knitting

3D printing and digital knitting have changed the face of the industry. The latter is ideal to show off the incredible progression in the 3D printing world as well as the range of customization possibilities. The digitally-knitted urban wears will be perfect to place the functionalities and benefits at the places that the body needs it the most. Small wonder that the idea of digital knitting and the mass production of such apparels are gaining popularity both among the customers and the textile manufacturers these days.

The fashion segment is fully dependent on the requirements of customers. In an industry where trends can and do change very quickly, companies should have the tools to be ahead of the game. When it comes to purchasing decisions on the basis of numerous things, all factors have to be taken into account.

Lacking up-to-date information or knowledge about customers can result in lackluster insight, a loss of business opportunity, and little or no growth. That is where technology can come in handy. By constantly collecting and looking at customer information, fashion brands can keep ahead of the field. Here is how it can help brands in the fashion industry get closer to customers.

Drive Agility

Fashion brands are setting up shop every single day. Fashion trends change with just one post from the best influencers. Brands constantly strive to be familiar with trends in the fashion world, in addition to customer preferences, and they change their approaches to be more successful than their competitors.

Being sufficiently nimble to serve the ever-changing customer needs is important to gain the biggest possible advantage from market opportunities as these appear, but fashion brands can also strive to get products to customers. A typical GTM (go-to-market) strategy involves many processes across numerous places and teams. Technology could just help these companies manage more agile manufacturing operations, in addition to supply chain operations. For instance, analytics can allow brands to improve product tracking and product traceability, product flow management, manage their warehouses with higher amount of accuracy, and optimize inventory levels. Improved efficiency can help them not just keep the optimal stock levels, but also supply the market with the right products at the right time.

Understand Consumer Behavior

Assume if you could understand what a fashion customer will purchase even before he or she visits your brick and mortar store or e-commerce website. Dozens of factors influence consumer behavior in regards to fashion, and technology can simplify those variables.

Technology can actually help fashion brands know their customer’s requirements before the latter fully realize it themselves.

Enable Personalization

In this customer-centric age, people prefer brands offering a considerable degree of personalization. Today’s technology allows companies to make the customer experience more personal. With AI-powered programs and machine learning, fashion brands are able to send targeted fashion product recommendations to customers. By keeping an eye on what resonates with consumers, fashion brands can personalize the experience of shopping by customer. For instance, if a fashion company tracks one has been seeing a particular garment’s silhouette, then its site can recommend styles matching what that customer has been looking at.

Local manufacturing is considered a great tool for generating a successful wave of business in the local markets of the country. Initial response of anyone to fashion is to think of a distant producer. Though this was the norm for a long time, it is not anymore. The world of fashion is slowly becoming integrated into the local manufacturing bases. If there is technology, manufacturing process, and a supply chain established in your own place, there is no need to worry about the manufacturing that takes place elsewhere. Below is a discussion on the ability of local manufacturing to improve the Fashion Industry of U.S.A.

Transparency has become an important part of the fashion industry. In today’s digital age, the consumer has a voice that could be heard. This demands transparency. It has been observed that consumers among millennials are very specific about what they use. Hence, it is necessary to provide a considerable amount of transparency to the customers in order to build a long-lasting relation with the company. A careful blend of supply chain and local manufacturing can enable just this. It provides full transparency to consumers and helps them relay useful information to the customers.

Ethical Fashion

The fashion industry has been accused of using unethical methods to achieve its targets. This includes the use of child labor, insufficient working conditions, and improper organization of the wage system in places like knitting mills. Several companies continue to function this way, while today’s conscious customers are unwilling to accept any of this. When a company outsources to another country, it is impossible to have complete control of every activity undertaken in the subsequent processes. Meanwhile, if you manufacture locally, it creates more job opportunities within the locality apart from ensuring proper working conditions and ethical manufacturing.

Improve Local Businesses

Manufacturing locally has the advantage of supporting the community in the region. There are several job opportunities created for the home community if a textile company is opened. There might be several vendors and brands that are homegrown and deserve the support of a company. They may have good potential and may provide you the higher quality that you would get if you outsourced it beyond borders.

Local manufacturing clearly has a number of benefits such as heavily reduced shipping costs, and domestic economic growth. Moreover, the system is ideal for today’s customer base who are more than happy to be provided transparency into the manufacturing process.

Latest Fashion Trends

We have reached a point in time where fashion brands across the globe are starting to feel the need to embrace new technology just to stay on point. Customer needs are becoming nothing if not more unique. Combine that with the pace at which the industry is moving, and it is easy to see the need to improve creativity, support, and productivity in all areas, including clothing.

If you have heard of the way AI has been changing the game, then you are not the only one to have paid attention. Everything including design to business analysis has areas where AI can bring in tangible improvements.

Inventory Management

With globalization headed fast into complete realization, fashion brands are finding it hard to cater to people in new market and locations. Some foresight into what styles constitute best sellers is paramount to making sure customer satisfaction does not dip, and neither does profitability. AI can help fashion brands maintain just enough stock to keep business from halting, without, in the meantime, accumulating overstock. Forecasting errors can be done away with as long as demand is predicted accurately. What can also be kept accurate is the analysis of product returns.

Design Automation

Few things in the fashion industry are as important as design. AI these days plays a heavy role in the development of products from knitting mills. The right tools in this area let you go through consumer data and figure out what trends and styles go with the highest demands in the target market. AI can also be leveraged to generate data automatically, so that all you need to do afterward is examine it. This kind of automation is key to quickly and accurately meeting customer needs.

Production planning

It is the nature of the fashion industry that brands have been ready constantly to come with changing demands. It requires precise planning to ensure that quality shipments are done and completed on time. This holds from the point of selection of fabric made in USA, up until the delivery of products. Brands lose around $642 billion from returns alone, which is why AI based scheduling and planning are such a good idea. Brands employing this can use optimization algorithms which enable better planning that balances materials, resources, and quantities.

In other words, AI has what it takes to drive improvements in a range of areas, including inventory management, design automation, and production planning, by laying a groundwork for transparent decision making.

Latest Fashion Trends

When customized for one’s perfectly unique body, clothing items enhance and celebrate his or her personality. Beautiful clothes are, after all, ones which make us feel good. These are made of yarns right when one has the need, and with quantity-precision. Any excess would end up polluting the environment, but beautiful clothing makers avoid that.

When Beautiful Clothing is Worn, the Commodity Itself Becomes a Connection

The philosophy on how to make such clothing has been a unifying and timeless one across centuries.

As per the studies, humans first wore clothes around 170,000 years before. After skin and then leather, the first kinds of woven textiles in history were natural, and thus, circular. Cotton, silk, linen, and flax were made locally in India, Japan, China, and Egypt. The clothing making skills emerged from textiles making. The way clothing was made in the past is intriguing to look at and is varied across centuries.

In the early 19th century, before the invention of the sewing machine, rural homes literally owned the entire process of making textile and clothing items. Linen and wool were most commonly used. Yarn dyes were created from berries, barks, and roots. Well-fed sheep were sheared by men. Then women in the household spun yarn, made colored dyes, weaved, and sewed. Kids took care of knitting for caps and stockings. There was zero wastage of materials because they made all items to cover the requirements across varying climate conditions and in precise quantities for the entire family. The whole family worked as a supply chain, to make cloth locally in their residences.

Until the 1300’s, clothing was a just way to cover the body. Then came the tailor, particularly in cities, with the skill to cut and to piece together a clothing item in various ways to improve the body contours with customized clothing. It was tailors who carried forward the zero-excess custom of made-to-order clothing, but besides that, they were able to sell the sheer freedom of expression by way of “fashion”.

Whether prehistoric period or 2019, clothing items with a purpose has always been made locally, without waste, with natural lifecycles, made to order, and through a linked supply chain. While the “why” part of making such clothing will remain the same as it was in the past, the “how” part has been changed. Now, clothing making involves the use of robotics, automation and technology, and it continues to grow.

Chemical Treatment Processes

These days a lot of people overlook the fact that the clothes on their backs went through drawn-out, resource-intensive production processes just to reach them. Even widely hailed natural fibers such as wool and cotton could at some point have been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and other undesirable-killers.

Treatment Processes

There is also the fact that most cloth needs to be dyed before it hits the market, as well as treated with compounds which make it resistant to odor, fire, stains, water, and wrinkling. Not to mention petroleum-based fibers such as nylon and polyester, which pull in even more chemicals to the mix by the time that they hit shelves, thanks to textile printing and other similar processes.

Lax Regulations

Unfortunately, just like in the home-cleaning industry, the standards and regulations in the textile and fashion industries too are notoriously lax. Clothing retailers are required today by the FTC to share little more than country of origin, fiber content, and identity of manufacturer. There is nothing that forces companies to reveal the chemicals used during production, although an estimated minimum of 250 “restricted substances” get used in that area.

The Greenpeace DETOX Campaign

Other than The BtL “F”ed Up Fashion 5, there is a list of chemicals which consumers need to avoid when they buy clothing, or at least be aware of. The Greenpeace DETOX campaign lays out several more that designers and manufacturers should steer clear of when they source and produce fabrics.

Phthalates

Short-chain chlorinated paraffin

Chlorinated and brominated flame retardants

Alkylphenols

Perfluorinated chemicals

Chlorophenols

Azo dyes

Chlorobenzenes

Chlorinated solvents

Organotin compounds

Heavy metals like chromium, cadmium, mercury, and lead

Heavy metals often find use in fabric-making, where they act as adhesives which ease dyes sticking to fabrics. When retail or wholesale fabrics made in this way is worn, the heavy metals can seep in the skin pores and cause issues with the wearer’s endocrine system, which covers the functioning of the adrenal and endocrine glands. This can often lead to cancer, as well as behavioral and neurological disorders.

Kirsten Brodde of the Detox my Fashion initiative by Greenpeace opines that detoxification is a new baseline in the industry, “…because forerunners of the textile sector went from total denial and opacity of their supply chain to transparency and the banning of all hazardous chemicals…the rest of the industry that’s using hazardous chemicals is not an option anymore.”

Creating a clothing brand that can attract a number of customers are a challenging task for sure, especially in this competitive environment. Many shopping sites have raised their bar so high when it comes to the convenience of their customers. The user-friendliness of the site as well is of utmost importance. Currently, the high-end shopping site like Amazon has completely changed the perspective of consumers on the capabilities and services of shopping brands. So, buck up and design a customer-oriented brand to succeed in the field. Some of the important points that you must keep in mind to achieve your objective are given below.

The Bottom Line of your Clothing Brand Must Be Customer Service

The best way to drive your clothing brand to success is by listening to the feedbacks of your consumers with an open heart. Try to respond to every customer feedback. However, never make them feel that you are pushing a sale. Note that you must be able to alter things according to the needs of your customers. Otherwise, they will rely on some other clothing brands that cater to their requirements. Needless to mention, the competition in the field is quite high these days.

Reliable Customer Service and Product Delivery

Unlike olden days, buyers are not ready to waste their time waiting for their purchased products for a week or more. On top of that, the prime services of shopping sites deliver the products to its customers within two days or less. This surely has an impact on the current shopping culture of consumers. Hence, make sure that you can keep up with the current product delivery speed rate. Plus, be available in case of any technical issues. Then only, you will be able to achieve a reliable and trustworthy position amongst the shoppers.

Stay a Step Ahead of the Current Marketing Trends

The main reason that people choose to shop from online clothing stores is the availability of latest apparels and discount deals. Further, the way you interact with your customers is also important. Stay a step ahead of the current marketing trends and make your shopping site engaging by including different features. For instance, some clothing brands let their customers order the clothes and pay only after trying them on. Likewise, some clothing brands employ software with which customers can envision how they look in various attires. Trying something innovative and creative like these will surely do wonders when it comes to your overall sales.
